Iran’s Part In the End of Days

Iran has been at the center of world news in recent months. Its continued threats to destroy Israel, along with its radical goal of completely eliminating all Jews and Christians from the planet, keeps it at the center of attention for world leaders and Biblical scholars alike.

The questions of many Christians and end-times prognosticators are easily summed up by asking, “What is Iran’s part in the last days?” For those who don’t already know, Iran was known as Persia until 1935. So even though the name ‘Iran’ is not found in the Bible, Persia plays a major role in Israel’s future. And Israel is the focus of end-times prophecies and the ushering in the Kingdom of Christ.

Radical Islam has ruled Iran since 1979. Since that time, Iran has refused to recognize Israel as a nation. Their stance against this tiny country has become more and more aggressive in recent years. At this time it is estimated that at least a quarter-million Iranian-supplied missiles are ready to fire on strategic locations within Israel’s borders.

How does this play out in end-times prophecies? Many scholars believe the Russia-Turkey-Iran alliance of 2018 brought the world another step closer to the war of Gog/Magog spoken of in Ezekiel 38. The relationships between these countries are highly complex and sometimes volatile. Of course, many of the greatest motivating factors are economical in nature. But radical Islam is one religious factor that cannot be easily contained by political negotiations.

At the heart of everything is who God is. To Christians and Jews, the God they serve is non-negotiable. He is the Creator and ultimate Dictator of the earth’s future. Islamists also believe their god, Allah (no, He’s not the same as the Christian God), is the only god. They are not hesitant to use violent means to bring the world under Allah’s control.

According to Biblical prophecy, Gog/Magog, Persia, Lybia, and Cush (scholars argue whether Cush refers to Sudan or Ethiopia) join forces against Israel. The attack will be like a storm, like a cloud covering the land (Ezekiel 38:9). Ezekiel 38:10-13 tells us this attacking army’s goal is to plunder and take a great deal of spoil for themselves.

However, the Bible states that God Himself will defend His people by supernatural means and Israel will not be destroyed. The tenuous alliance of these countries will break down and they will begin to destroy each other. It is believed by some that the break-down in current political powers will help to usher in the rise of the end-times Antichrist.

Christians need to remember that the Bible tells us that the spirit of antichrist is already active in the world (1 John 2:18; 4:3). In America and in Europe, the increased influence of this antichrist spirit is becoming more and more obvious. It is not a great stretch to say that radical Islam such as we now see ruling Iran is just one tool used by Satan as an alternative to submission to the true God.

Iran’s radical government and open hostility toward Israel, as well as toward Jews and Christians in general, is helping to stir up many to call for a solution that will bring about world peace. The breakdown of political balance after the battle of Gog/Magog will only add fuel to the cry for global unity. How easy it will be for the Antichrist’s regime to step into the void, just as it was for Hitler’s regime to step in after World War I.

Make no mistake. Iran’s present actions certainly lend themselves to many key prophetic outcomes. When these events will play out is not known, but it seems the current stand-off between Iran and Israel cannot continue much longer.

Iranian radical Islamic cells within the U.S. are prepared to disrupt American commerce. A major disruption in the U.S. power grid may be all it takes to incapacitate the country for a long enough time for Iran and its allies to carry out a major attack on Israel. Many are asking, as the Biblical prophecies are fulfilled, are spoiled American Christians ready to hold fast to their faith to the end?
